"From Explanations from Exile, a literary initiative I started here at the prison in 2016. It was inspired by the truth telling process that restorative justice programming has served to facilitate between survivors and persons incarcerated for violent crime. I've solicited writings and recorded interviews from some of the residents here to highlight the unique exposure to community violence and trauma that many violent offenders from the inner-city experience. My aim with this project wasn't to provide a platform for offending citizens to justify the injuries they've imposed on the community. Rather, my goal is to offer access to the complex truths behind the violent decisions made by this demographic. In doing so, we hope to provide answers, insight and some measure of healing to survivors and communities impacted by inner-city violence." - Truth
